Growing Christian Persecution in America:

Believe It or Not

America from its inception has been a God-fearing, Christian nation. Our forefathers made sure that this became a part of our heritage. However, in modern America, certain forces are attempting to rid America of the Christian faith. The faith of America’s founders is hanging on by a thread. Even though churches in the United States are still operational, the spirit of Christ is being attacked throughout the land. Therefore, the persecution of Christians is growing in the United States.

In the twentieth century, thousands of Christians have died for their beliefs all around the world. However, in the last five decades, this anti-Christian spirit has spread to America. According to Manly P. Hall, a well-known author and leading scholar in the fields of religion, mythology, mysticism, and the occult, “They are the invisible powers behind the thrones of earth, and men are but marionettes, dancing while the invisible ones pull the strings. Satan's string pullers have patiently manipulated unregenerate architects of American society for over five decades, networking both visible and invisible principalities to discredit Christian causes. Indicators reveal the propaganda blame-game against western believers is working.” (1)

Even though most Americans have never been persecuted like the Jews during the Holocaust, the persecution of Christians in the future in the United States could take on some of the same characteristics. First, Jews were isolated and marginalized. Second, the propaganda machines made the German people hate and develop prejudice toward all Jews. Ultimately, this persecution led to the mass annihilation of over six million Jewish men, women, and children. Unfortunately, these are some of the same procedures being used in America today against the Christian population. (1)

There are many seeds of persecution that exist in the United States. These “seeds” affect every part of the American culture. Since Americans are too involved with their day to day existence, they fail to see what is happening in their own country. Apparently, it is accepted that Christians would be persecuted in a communist country. However, Americans fail to realize that religious freedom in America today pertains to every religion except Christianity. This is seen in the ongoing effort by many members of Congress to pass Hate Crime legislation that targets the beliefs of Christians in the United States.

Since Christian persecution abounds in the United States, it is extremely important to fight back against it. Therefore, it is also important to know what types of persecution are happening in America’s own backyard. However, it is so depressing to see how the United States government is banning the truth and replacing it with tyranny. America is becoming a nation that anything will be accepted except the truths of the Bible. According to William Penn on January 3, 1701, “If we will not be governed by God, then we will be ruled by tyrants.” (3)

It is extremely important to meet the challenge of Christian persecution head on. Christians must not deny that persecution does exist in America. If the issue is not addressed now, it will be worse later. As stated by Mary Ann Collins, a former Catholic nun, “We will have to be willing to make sacrifices, be disciplined, persevere in the face of hardship, endure suffering, overcome frustration and inconvenience, and spend more money than we want to.” (2) Also, “If we don’t deal with it, then it will keep getting worse. It will become more widespread, cause more suffering, and be more difficult to deal with.” (2) Therefore, the general public must be made aware of what is happening in America.

According to Berit Kjos of Kjos Ministries, “America’s tyranny toward Christians can be seen in the following trends and events. First, the United States Supreme Court is basing many of its decisions on United Nations and European models. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg stated, “The Supreme Court is looking beyond America's borders for guidance in handling cases on issues like the death penalty and gay rights.” (3) Also, Justice Breyer reaffirmed Justice Ginsburg as he stated, “The world is growing together through commerce, through globalization, through the spread of democratic institutions, through immigration to America. It is becoming more and more one world of many different kinds of people ... And whether our constitution fits into the governing documents of other nations, I think, will be a challenge for the next generation.” (3) Sadly, as stated by Berit Kjos, “Our world can't tolerate the old Biblical laws that identify certain behaviors as sin and certain beliefs as incompatible with Christian faith. Offended by the truth, it bans the convictions that once gave rise to social order and prosperity. Its new systems leave no room for an uncompromising moral standard which can't be conformed to man's shortsighted vision of the 21st century community. (3)

Second, the trashing of the Ten Commandments has become a new trend in America. In fact, Roy Moore, Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, sacrificed his esteemed position in an effort to save the Ten Commandments from being removed from the state judicial building. However, the un-American activities of the U.S. Supreme Court prevented his agenda from happening. But, according to Judge Moore, “We must acknowledge God in the public sector because the state constitution explicitly requires us to do so. The Alabama Constitution specifically invokes 'the favor and guidance of Almighty God' as the basis for our laws and justice system. As the chief justice of the state's Supreme Court, I am entrusted with the sacred duty to uphold the state's constitution.” (3)

The third major event in the persecution of Christians is the re-learning in government schools. Schools throughout the United States are eliminating all signs and symbols of the Christian faith. Discrimination toward the teachings of Jesus Christ has become the accepted norm in the public education systems in America. Any religion except Christianity is accepted in a nation founded on the Judeo-Christian ethical system. Students may write reports about Mohammed, but not Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten son. (3)

Based on the methods used by intolerant, anti-Christian groups, public schools and the media are the major areas to be targeted for the purpose of indoctrinating America’s children. According to Thomas Horn, CEO of RaidersNewsNetwork, “If one succeeds in separating Godly principles from public education and the media, they deny citizens the knowledge of good and keep them from embracing the laws of God. To that extent, they are pawns of evil and subvert and destroy both the message and the messengers of righteousness.” (1)

As a result of the trends of persecution in America, Christian persecution is on the rise. It can be viewed throughout the complete spectrum of the American society, not just the public education system. As a result, there are several things that Christians can expect to happen in the very near future. First, as has already started, the governments of the world, including the United States, are gradually denying Christians the same privileges as other religious groups. Christians who preach against life styles that the Bible classifies as sin and an abomination to God will face many kinds of fear that will cause much stress for them. The different kinds of fear would be:

    1.    Fear of being arrested.
    2.    Fear of being associated with radicals.
    3.    Fear of being seen as unloving.
    4.    Fear of getting a bad reputation.
    5.    Fear of government scrutiny.
    6.    Fear of losing one’s tax exempt status. (4)

New words to describe Bible-believing Christians are being introduced into the American society, too. Christians are being labeled as “intolerant” and they are even being grouped with the fight against “terrorism.” In fact, some fellow believers may even take on the “Judas Syndrome” and turn over their friends to the local law enforcement agencies. As described in Matthew 24: 9-10, “Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.” (4)

What must Christians in America do to return to the God of their forefathers and to defend their Christian heritage against the onslaught of anti-Christian forces? They must renew their covenant with God. If Christians are going to fight against the cohorts of Satan, they must first make sure that the God who they represent is with them in the battles that lie ahead. As happened too often to the Israelites, they would be led into captivity when they failed to serve God. When they returned to God, He always brought them out of captivity. If American Christians do not truly return to their God and Savior, the persecution that awaits them will bring them to their knees in agony. But, if they have their God on their side, they will be victorious over religious persecution in America. (3)

Christian persecution on the rise

Start of Article-->It would be rather easy – and appropriate – for me to change the name of my website from CultureWatch to PersecutionWatch. To watch Western culture is increasingly to watch case after case of Christian persecution. On a daily basis Christians are being vilified, attacked, persecuted, and targeted by various forces, including secularist governments.

Indeed, as I have documented so often here, the persecution is coming more and more from the state, which seems to have decided that the biggest threat to its existence is biblical Christianity. Christians of course claim a higher loyalty to the only one true sovereign. Thus the state, which has delegated – and limited - authority from God, cannot claim or demand ultimate allegiance.

That is partly why all sorts of laws are being passed to effectively silence the Christian churches. All sorts of cheap excuses are brought up to render believers ineffective in proclaiming their faith. All manner of politically correct foolishness is sweeping the West, all with the intent of muting the Christian voice.

Consider this incredible case in San Diego, California. Here is how one report covers the story: “A San Diego pastor and his wife claim they were interrogated by a county official and warned they will face escalating fines if they continue to hold Bible studies in their home. The couple, whose names are being withheld until a demand letter can be filed on their behalf, told their attorney a county government employee knocked on their door on Good Friday, asking a litany of questions about their Tuesday night Bible studies, which are attended by approximately 15 people.

“’Do you have a regular weekly meeting in your home? Do you sing? Do you say “amen”?’ the official reportedly asked. ‘Do you say, “Praise the Lord”?’ The pastor’s wife answered yes. She says she was then told, however, that she must stop holding ‘religious assemblies’ until she and her husband obtain a Major Use Permit from the county, a permit that often involves traffic and environmental studies, compliance with parking and sidewalk regulations and costs that top tens of thousands of dollars. And if they fail to pay for the MUP, the county official reportedly warned, the couple will be charged escalating fines beginning at $100, then $200, $500, $1000, ‘and then it will get ugly’.”

Imagine that! Now even home Bible studies are becoming illegal. What sort of madness is this? Clearly it is diabolically-inspired madness. We know that there is a very real spiritual power which wants to silence all of God’s people. And this spiritual battle is of course being fought out in our courts, our laws, our cultures and our social policies.

Dean Broyles of the Western Center for Law and Policy said, “I’ve been leading Bible studies in my home for 13 years in San Diego County, and I personally believe that home fellowship Bible studies are the past and future of the church. … If you look at China, the church grew from home Bible studies. I’m deeply concerned that if in the U.S. we are not able to meet in our homes and freely practice our religion, then we may be worse off than China.”

The law group issued a statement saying that it is “troubled by this draconian move to suppress home Bible studies. If the current trends in our nation continue, churches may be forced underground. If that happens, believers will once again be forced to meet in homes. If homes are already closed by the government to assembly and worship, where then will Christians meet?”

Good question indeed. With hate crime laws, anti-discrimination legislation, and all sorts of other nefarious laws, the free proclamation of the gospel is under threat already. Churches are especially being targeted here. And now the powers that be want to clamp down on Christian activities in the home as well.

Perhaps if these trends continue in the West, believers will be forced to meet in isolated forests and deserts, away from the ruling authorities and religious police, just as is happening in China and other nations where the church has been driven underground.

Not long ago Western Christians used to read about the horrible persecution of the church in Communist countries such as the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. We read about the great exploits and sufferings of Richard Wurmbrand (Tortured for Christ), Haralan Popov (Tortured for his Faith), Brother Andrew (God’s Smuggler) and others who ministered amidst great hardship and opposition in Communist lands.

I read these books with fascination and horror when I was a young believer in the 1970s. Little did I realise that within a few short decades some of these Communist nations would no longer be under the jackboot of atheistic Communism, but that the “free” West would quickly begin to take their place.

Sure, the US does not yet have its own Gulag, and Australia has not yet set up concentration camps for those troublesome Christians. But the way things are heading, it may not be all that far off. Increasingly it is becoming very risky indeed to publically proclaim your Christian faith in the secular post-Christian West.

Indeed, the West is not so much post-Christian any longer, but actually anti-Christian. And it is getting more so each passing day. And one sure sign that things have reached their logical outcome is when this website is no longer to be found. One day it may well be forcibly taken down by censorious authorities.

Of course the early church wrestled with all this as well. They proclaimed Jesus Christ as the one true royal master, not Caesar. A clash of royal domains was underway. As Tom Wright says about Paul while in prison: “The reason he was there was that what he had been doing and saying was seen as an offence to the people in power. He was announcing a royal message, a ‘gospel’ which clashed head on with the royal message on which the Roman Empire was built: the announcement of Caesar as Lord.”

We too proclaim a different king. This is the risen Lord who was betrayed and rejected by men. They hated him and they will hate us. There is no getting around this. In the light of all this, every one of us must start asking ourselves some very hard questions.

Are we willing to pay the price for following Christ publically and boldly? Are we committed to our Lord so fully, that we would be willing to lose our jobs, be heavily fined, or spend time in prison for the sake of Christ? Are we willing to give our very life away for the sake of the gospel?

But remember, it is always easier to say we will die for our Lord. It is much harder to actually live for our Lord right now. Will we walk with him along the road less travelled? Will we join him on the Via Dolorosa? Will we take up our cross and follow him as he has called us to do?

Very soon indeed these will not just be rhetorical questions.

Believers are losing their lives around the world for being Christians. This story of a couple from San Diego in no way compares with martyrdom by any means, but it is one more story on a stack of others that may be an indicator of how Christianity will come to be treated in the future in America.

Basically, a couple has a weekly Bible study in their home that averages about 15 people. The police show up and interrogate them, ultimately requiring them to obtain a permit for holding religious services. Read the whole story here. If the county government doesn’t change its mind, they may go to court over the matter.

Had they had 30 people over for a big drunken party, that wouldn’t require a permit, but since they used Bibles and Christian terminology, the government has to have some role in it. Scary! Where will things go next?
